The exhibition sets out to recapture one of the most dramatic – and sublime – periods in art, both in Italy and internationally. The selection of works by four of the most important European artists in the post-war period – Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Giuseppe Capogrossi and Afro Basaldella – submerses us into this "response from art to the inauthentic world imposed on human beings" (Giulio Carlo Argan, 1961).
One of the central preoccupations of art in the second half of the 20th Century was its need to secure a new creative freedom. The exhibition's itinerary underlines this systematic questioning of the elementary components of artistic expression: gesture, sign, color, matter and surface. The exploration of form, formlessness, experiment and process as new sources of expression gives birth to works that are independent of any ethical or aesthetic necessity, of any collective unambiguous language code, and for which the distinction between painting, sculpture, engraving and drawing is no longer required.
