In 1917, on the initiative of museum directors, artists and private collectors, the Société suisse de gravure (Swiss Engraving Society) was founded. It exists to promote the contemporary graphic arts – including artists outside of Switzerland from the 1980s onwards – in particular by supporting artists in experimenting with new techniques. Today, graphic art is more vital than ever, utilizing a diversity of languages and new techniques; beyond the simple metal matrix and sheets of paper, there is an infinite variety of formats. The exhibition offers an intriguing panorama of Swiss engraving of the past 100 years, complemented by major international figures of the past 20 years, from Rosemarie Trockel to Markus Schinwald.
